The Courage, Freedom, Love! exhibition at the Maritime Museum of Finland is a magical adventure into the way of life and philosophy of the Moomins.
The values espoused by the Moomin stories of Tove Jansson – friendship, love, respect for nature, love of adventure, equality, tolerance, freedom and courage – are still topical and meaningful today. Through art and their warm humour, the Moomin stories also reflect many shared values of today and give direction to the lives of children, adolescents and adults alike.
The exhibition invites visitors to a magical adventure through a dark forest towards the peaceful Moominvalley, and to relaxing on a rocky beach, listening to the splashing of the waves. The exhibition visitors take a dive into the Hobgoblin’s hat, waken in the silence of Moominland Midwinter and take part in a fairytale party at the Floating Theatre.
The illustrations and quotations are based on original works by Tove Jansson. The world created in the exhibition is nostalgic, comforting and delightful.
The exhibition showcased at the Maritime Museum of Finland was produced by the National Museum of Finland together with Moomin Characters Oy Ltd. It is based on an exhibition on display at the National Museum in 2020–2021. The artistic realisation and exhibition architecture are designed by Alexander Reichstein.
The exhibition is complemented by Tove Jansson’s and Tuulikki Pietilä’s boat, Victoria, which they used to travel to their beloved summer home on Klovharun island. The boat is showcased in the Boat Hall of Maritime Centre Vellamo.
